August 28, 2013: First day as a Food Bank Specialist!

Damn, that happened fast! I did not even expect to start really looking for jobs until later in August – what a surprise it was to start in August, 18 days after arrival!

Anyway, I am now working at a food bank in Seattle’s Broadway/Capitol Hill district. I work a normal 9-5 shift but my responsibilities are anything from normal. From pick up & delivery in a van, to inventory management & organization, to volunteer coordination & database management – my days will be varied as I run the day-to-day operations of the food bank. Alongside me is a Lutheran Volunteer Corps volunteer who also works on the day-to-day operations and focuses more on farmer’s markets and cooking classes. Finally our supervisor does a little bit of everything and also oversees the more logistical aspects of our operation.

One of the upsides of this position is that I get to learn a lot about food security, homelessness, poverty, food stamps, and other policy and social justice issues. I am really taking a liking to public policy, and perhaps it might be my next step towards further education. Only time will tell – in the mean time, expect more of a focus on food security and related issues.
