Gettysburg Never Seemed As Big

Gettysburg has never seemed as big as it does now that I am a senior.  I feel so…old.  All around me I see new faces, young faces.  They do not know.  They do not remember.  They never experienced.  I feel isolated by those who surround me.  Even my fellow seniors, still caught in the throng or looking to more education. Even they seem distant.

What is worse is that all those who know are gone.  Gone to the other side of the state, the country, the Earth.  They’ve moved on and left me behind to finish my time.  But I do not want to finish.  I want to be free.  I want to move on, to leave behind the classroom and discover the world.

Blog Update

24 Monday Sep 2012

To my avid fans, of who there are [not] many, I apologize for my severe lack of posts in the last few weeks. Personally, academically, and professionally I have been exceptionally busy. Unfortunately, while I love this blog and I want to remain active, the reality of life is that my grades, my residents, and all those who depend on me must come first. And second comes my sanity. I have considered on many an occasion in the last week how I might find time to blog and I have grimaced at the knowledge that my weekly series have not been, well, weekly. Still, there is only so much I can do.

Gettysburg Rideshare Board

Carpool, Gettysburg College, Rideshare

I don’t have much to write on transportation this week, but I do have something to share.  Carpools are an excellent way to save money while behaving more sustainability.  And what better place to use a carpool than college?  Almost everyone goes home for the main breaks, but so few here at Gettysburg College carpool.  Well, I hope to change that.

Two years ago there was a very quick attempt to create a rideshare board for the school but it was not very effective.  Chief among the problems was that it was not organized well.  Rideshare boards need to be easy to use and simple to navigate.  I recently came across a national rideshare site called http://ridejoy.com/.  Seeing the website inspired me to delve back into the rideshare program, and after some research I decided on a google doc format.  I’ve created a rideshare sheet that I hope will be more effective in coordinating rides.  It even utilizes google’s gadgets to create automatic mapping of destinations, providing a great visual boost to the process.

Check it out here.  The next step is to work out how best to advertise it to the student body…

Edit (10/29/12): I have since updated my rideshare dramatically and am now using a form submission process.  The new rideshare board is looking a lot better but still has a lot of room for growth. Ideally, what I need is someone with computer talent to take it to the next level.

Thrifting

second-hand, thrift

This morning was an excellent morning of thrifting. I took someone to Harrisburg for a train and decided to make my trip worthwhile. After a quick stop at target (there are none in Gettysburg) I decided to take an alternate route home and see what I could find. Turns out it was a great decision…I got everything in the photo plus a dozen eggs from a local, cage-free farm. All for about $11. Win.
